Map of Georgia.  It appears the nation of Georgia may be indefensible now with Russia now permanently south of the Caucasus mountain range.

Russia's deputy chief of General Staff Col.-Gen. Anatoly Nogovitsyn speaks to the media pointing at at what he says is a seized Georgian military map, Moscow on Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2008. According to Nogovitsyn a map in the background, which was captured by Russian paratroopers in an abandoned Georgian military vehicle in Abkhazia, depicts Georgian plans to invade the separatist republic. Nogovitsyn said Wednesday Georgia planned to invade Abkhazia after the seizure of South Ossetia, but the Russian military buildup in Abkhazia wrecked the Georgian plan. Georgia insisted its troops had been driven out from Abkhazia by Russian forces.

Good chance this is simply a forgery.  Any historical study of KGB active operations indicates forgeries were always a favorite.  You can fool most of the press all the time.

Georgian civilians run in front of an approaching Russian military convoy near Gori, northwest of Tbilisi, Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2008.

Reach your own conclusion on this one.

So... should we consider the Second Cold War to have begun?   Did the first one ever really end?  Sure reminds me of old Soviet-era headlines from back in the day.  Same clumsy propaganda machine and same heavy-handed tactics, for sure.

I don't think it will be long and they will be fitting Putin for a one-piece uniform.  So, yes.

Well, falling oil prices is sure going to sting in Russia. I think they'll be able to gain more using soft power in the long run. In the coming weeks all sorts of countries are going to start whining for loans, like Iceland already has.

Yes--it looks like there will be all kinds of interesting scenario possibilities for the Battle Command game in the near future.  Thank you Russian Bear!
